What is the Fair Labor Standards Act? Does it apply to my business? What is tip credit? Does waiting time, on-call time, meal, rest periods or training time count as work time? What constitutes a part-time, full-time employee? What are the laws pertaining to salaried employees? What salary deductions are permitted? What are the most common mistakes made by employers? What additional regulations does the State of Ohio have in regard to wage and hour requirements?
If you are business owner, executive or a member of your company’s human resources team, chances are you’ve asked questions about what is and is not permitted by employers, in regard to their employees, both at the Federal and State levels.
The Gallia County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce an upcoming seminar, geared to answering all the above questions and more for regional businesses. The special FLSA seminar will feature Barbara Barrett, an investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division and Jackie Clark, Investigator Supervisor for the Ohio Department of Commerce.
“We are very excited about this event,” said Chamber Executive Director Michelle Miller. “To have both the Federal and State Wage and Hour Divisions, in one room, to answer questions, is an amazing opportunity for our local businesses. I really can’t tell you the number of hours I’ve spent on the U.S. Department of Labor’s and the State of Ohio’s websites, to find answers regarding employment laws. The idea for this seminar was actually suggested by one of our members, Gale Hess, H.R. Manager for GKN Sinter Metals. We were able to secure a date with Ms. Barrett, as well as Ms. Clark, to bring this event to our region.”
Hess said the training she attended was very informative and Barrett delivered important information, ranging from updates on how to handle lunches and travel with salary personnel to answering questions regarding pending changes to the FLSA.
“For the cost and knowing the caliber of speaker, I think it’s such a wise investment of time, because that’s really all it is at this point. The Chamber made it so affordable. I would so encourage people to attend. No one would regret it,” said Hess. “I thought it was valuable enough that I’m sending someone from my staff to this one.”
Miller said seminars, like the FLSA seminar, are exactly the type of informational events she would like to see occur more often in Gallia County.
“We are working very hard to identify the services to most benefit our members and local businesses and bring those services to our members, instead of our members having to travel out of town,” said Miller.
The FLSA Seminar will take place on Thursday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Quality Inn, 577 SR 7 N, Gallipolis. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per person and lunch will be provided by The Wounded Goose.
